Plumbing

In SEO for plumbers, the biggest searches are often the least valuable

Ninety thousand people a month search for drain cleaning. A large share of them want a baking soda recipe, not a plumber. The searches worth having are a fraction of the size and cost three times more per click, which is the opposite of how most plumbing SEO gets planned.

What is SEO for plumbers?

SEO for plumbers is the work that makes a plumbing company findable in Google's map pack and organic results: the Business Profile, reviews, service pages and site speed. The part specific to plumbing is keyword selection, because plumbing topics attract enormous volumes of people who are trying to fix the problem themselves.

The short version

Plumbing is the trade where volume lies hardest. A keyword plan built on search numbers will point you at the biggest topics, and the biggest topics in plumbing are full of people who have already decided not to call anyone.

The Volume Trap

One topic, two completely different visitors

These are all drain cleaning searches. The estimated click price is the clearest signal of which ones advertisers believe turn into work.

Plumbing search volume plotted against estimated click value for five drain cleaning searches Five drain cleaning searches, each with a volume bar and a cost-per-click bar. The DIY and product searches carry the largest volumes and the lowest values. The service and emergency searches carry small volumes and the highest values. The plain term drain cleaning is the largest volume of all and sits mid-range on value. Read the top and bottom rows together. The baking soda search is fifty-six times larger than the emergency one and worth roughly one-sixty-seventh as much per visitor. A keyword tool sorted by volume puts the first row at the top of your content plan and buries the last one. That is how plumbing companies end up with traffic that never calls.

What To Target Instead

The words that usually signal a customer rather than a reader

In plumbing, intent often lives in the modifier rather than the topic. None of these are rules, and plenty of commercial searches carry no modifier at all. They are the signals worth building pages around.

Service, company, plumber

Adding any of these to a topic usually shifts the searcher. Drain cleaning is ambiguous. Drain cleaning service is more often somebody who has decided to hire. These modifiers cost more per click precisely because advertisers have worked out they convert, which makes them a reliable signal for organic targeting too.

Near me, and your actual towns

Geographic intent almost always means a real job. The searcher has a location and a problem in the same sentence. This is also where the map pack does most of the work, and where proximity to the searcher decides more than anything on your site does.

Emergency, same day, 24 hour

The highest intent and the highest value in the trade. These are people with water where it should not be. They carry a premium in paid search for the same reason they are worth ranking for organically: nobody types emergency and then decides to think about it for two weeks.

Replacement, installation, repipe

The large-ticket end. Lower volume, longer decision, and the searches most likely to be researched across several sessions before anyone calls. These deserve proper pages with pricing context rather than a line on a services list.

The test for any plumbing keyword: could somebody type this and then solve the problem without you? If yes, it belongs in a blog post at best, and probably nowhere at all.

The Ticket Spread

Plumbing hides an unusually wide range of intent under one word

A plumber sells a fifteen-minute drain clear and a full repipe under the same job title, and the difference between them is measured in thousands of dollars. Both customers search for a plumber. Other trades have a spread too, but few have this much of it hiding behind one word.

This matters for SEO because the cheap work is where the volume is. Blocked drains, running toilets and dripping faucets are common, frequently searched and frequently solved with a video. Water heater replacement, sewer line work and repiping are rarer, higher-value, and searched by people who have already accepted they need professional help.

A plumbing site that ranks well for everything tends to fill its schedule from the top of that list. If the phone is ringing constantly and the average ticket keeps falling, the site is working exactly as it was built. The fix is not more visibility, it is different visibility.

FAQ

What plumbers ask

How long does SEO take for a plumbing company?

▾
Profile and review work often moves inside 30 to 60 days. Service pages take months. The plumbing-specific point is that the slow part is usually worth more: the emergency and near-me searches respond to local signals relatively quickly, while the replacement and installation pages that carry the big tickets take longer and face more established competition.

Should I write blog posts about how to unclog a drain?

▾
Only if you are clear about what it is for. That content attracts enormous traffic that will not call you, because the reader is explicitly trying to avoid calling anyone. It can build topical coverage and occasionally catch somebody who fails and gives up. But if it is competing for attention with a water heater replacement page, the replacement page is worth more to you and should be written first.

Is plumbing SEO harder than other trades?

▾
Not harder to rank, but harder to plan, because the keyword data is more misleading than in other trades. Roofing and HVAC volumes mostly represent people who need a contractor. Plumbing volumes are heavily diluted by DIY and product searches, so a plan built on raw numbers will aim at the wrong things with more confidence than usual.

How many service pages does a plumbing site need?

▾
One per service you actually want more of, which is a different list from one per service you offer. Most plumbing companies want more water heater work, more sewer and repipe work, and enough drain work to keep the vans busy between them. Build pages in that order rather than alphabetically, and give the high-ticket services the detail they need to be chosen rather than a paragraph.

Do I need to rank for emergency plumbing?

▾
It depends whether you answer the phone out of hours. Emergency searches are the highest-intent traffic in the trade and they arrive at night and at weekends. Ranking for them without after-hours coverage means being found by people who then call the next result. Decide the operational question first, then the SEO question.

Can I do plumbing SEO myself?

▾
The profile and review side, yes, and it is the part that moves fastest. Keyword selection is where self-directed plumbing SEO usually goes wrong, for the reason this whole page describes: the tools hand you the biggest numbers and the biggest numbers are the worst traffic. If you do it yourself, build your list by intent first and check volume second.

What about commercial plumbing?

▾
Different search behavior entirely. Property managers and facilities staff search with different words, often at business volumes rather than household ones, and the relationship usually starts with a service agreement rather than a single job. The map pack matters less and approved-vendor status matters more. Worth its own pages rather than a mention on a residential site.
