Contractor SEO is two jobs, and most contractors are sold only one

On-page SEO gets your website ranking. Local SEO gets your business into the map pack. They are different disciplines, they compete for the same budget, and the one you need first depends on the work you sell.

What is contractor SEO?

Contractor SEO is the work of making a home service business findable in search. It splits into two halves: on-page and technical SEO, which gets your website ranking in ordinary results, and local SEO, which gets your business into the Google map pack. Most contractors need both, in that order of urgency reversed.

The short version

If you sell urgent local work, local SEO comes first and your website supports it. If you sell considered, higher-ticket projects, on-page SEO carries more weight because people research before they call.

The Split

Two halves that get sold as one thing

Agencies quote "SEO". These are the two disciplines hiding inside that word, and they behave differently.

What it movesYour website in ordinary resultsYour business in the map pack
Where the work happensPages, structure, speed, contentGoogle Business Profile, reviews, service areas

What breaks itThin pages, slow site, no structureWrong categories, stale reviews, inconsistent details

Google names relevance, distance and prominence as the three factors behind local ranking in its local ranking guidance, and sets the site-side requirements in Search Essentials.

From Our Own Work

Two things worth knowing before you buy either half

Not client results. Observations from running this site, because both apply directly to how contractor sites get sold.

We built five service pages from one template. Google indexed one and filed the other four as duplicates. Templated pages with the noun swapped are not distinct documents.

Which is what happens when a contractor buys forty near-identical town pages. Google keeps one and discards the rest, and the invoice covers all forty.

One of our own pages carried a hardcoded noindex tag that overrode the SEO plugin setting. It sat invisible to search for weeks while the plugin reported everything was fine.

By Trade

SEO is not the same job in every trade

The order changes with the work you sell. Emergency electrical and kitchen remodelling need almost opposite priorities.

SEO for electricians →

Heavily local. Urgent call-outs end in the map pack, so the profile and reviews outrank the website.

SEO for plumbers

Same urgency profile as electrical, with a larger emergency share. Coming next in this cluster.

HVAC SEO

Seasonal swings and higher ticket install work, so on-page carries more weight than in pure emergency trades.

Roofing SEO

Considered, insurance-adjacent and storm-driven. The research phase is long, which favours content.

FAQ

What contractors ask before they buy SEO

Which half should I buy first?

Usually local, because the map pack responds faster and most home service searches end there. The exception is higher-ticket considered work like remodelling, where people research for weeks before calling and on-page content does more of the persuading.

How is this different from the Visibility Engine?

This page explains the discipline. The Visibility Engine is how we deliver it as one of five connected parts, alongside the website, reviews, call capture and follow-up. Read this to understand SEO; read that to see how it is run.

Can I buy just the SEO part?

You can, and sometimes it is the right call. It is worth knowing that ranking harder while calls go unanswered raises the cost of every lost job rather than lowering it, which is why we run SEO inside a system rather than beside one.

How long before it pays?

Local work often shows movement in 30 to 60 days. On-page work compounds over quarters, and part of the delay is simply that a young site is not crawled often. Judge either at six months.

Do I need pages for every town I serve?

Only where you genuinely work. Near-identical location pages get consolidated, so most of them do nothing. A page earns its place with something real on it: a job you did there, photos, a specific local reference.

Which half is your business actually short of?

The Growth Score checks both, plus the four things that decide whether the traffic ever becomes a booked job.
