Roofing

In roofing PPC, the broadest searches are the expensive ones

A homeowner typing roof repair near me costs you around thirty-seven dollars a click. A homeowner typing hail damage roof repair costs about fifteen. Same roof, same money in the end. Not because Google values one less, but because the broad phrase is where every roofing account in the metro puts its budget, and that is where the bidding happens.

What is roofing PPC?

Roofing PPC is paid advertising where a roofing company pays for each click on its ad, usually through Google Ads. You bid on the searches homeowners type, and the auction price depends on how many other roofers want that same search. In roofing, the broadest searches are also the most expensive.

The short version

Most roofing accounts are built on six or seven obvious phrases, which is why those phrases cost what they cost. The specific searches, the ones that name the damage or the material, are cheaper and closer to a decision. The cheapest auction is the one you did not have to enter.

Real Numbers, Not Estimates

What roofing clicks actually cost

The pattern is the opposite of what most roofers assume. Urgency is expensive. Specificity is cheap.

Your own account will differ by market, quality score and competitor behavior. The point is the ratio between the rows, not the figures themselves.

Read the bottom three rows again. A homeowner searching storm damage roof repair near me has told you what happened, what they want and roughly where they are, and that click costs a quarter of the vague one above it. The reason is not that Google values it less. It is that the broad terms are where every roofing account in the metro puts its budget, so that is where the bidding happens.

Why Benchmarks Are Useless Here

The same click costs eight times more in one metro than another

This is why every article promising you an average roofing cost per lead is describing a market you probably do not operate in.

Storm-prone markets with a lot of competing roofers sit at the top. Larger markets where the spend is spread across more searches sit lower. So when somebody quotes you a cost per lead they achieved for a roofer elsewhere, the useful question is not whether they are telling the truth. It is which metro they did it in, and whether it had recently been hit.

Settings, Not Strategy

The account that works in April can lose money in hail season

The Reddit thread ranking on this exact search is a roofer whose campaign started well and then stopped. Usually nothing broke. The market changed around settings that did not.

SettingFine in a quiet monthWhat it does in storm week
Daily budget capPaces evenly across the daySpends out by mid-morning, so you are absent for the afternoon of the one day that mattered.
Location radiusCircle around your officeHail falls in a corridor, not a circle. You pay for clicks outside the damage and miss the streets inside it.
Keyword listRepair, replacement, near meMisses hail, storm, wind and shingle-loss searches that only exist this week, and they are the cheap ones.
Negative keywordsBlocks DIY and jobs trafficOften blocks insurance and claim wording too, which is the intent you now want most.
Bid strategyLearning quietly on stable dataAutomated bidding reads a demand spike as a new normal and can overspend before it recalibrates.
Landing pageHomepage or a general estimate pageSends a homeowner with visible damage to a page about materials and financing.

None of these are advanced. They are the same six settings, checked against a different week. The practical move is to write the storm-week version of your account now, while nothing is happening, and keep it paused. Deciding any of this on the morning after a hail event is how budgets disappear.

The Honest Limit

What paid search cannot do for a roofer

It cannot make you cheaper than the auction. If three roofers in your metro have deeper pockets and a higher close rate, they can afford a click you cannot, and no amount of optimization changes that arithmetic. What it can do is move you to the searches they are not paying attention to.

It also cannot outlast itself. The clicks stop the day the card stops, which is the difference between paid and the position you build in roofing SEO. Both are legitimate. Only one of them is still there next February.

And it cannot answer the phone. At sixty dollars a click, a missed call is not a missed call, it is sixty dollars you already spent to make a phone ring in an empty room.

The general form of that is worth keeping. Paid search can create demand. It cannot repair what happens after the click: the calls nobody answers, the quotes nobody follows up, the reviews that make a homeowner pick somebody else, or a close rate that was the real problem all along. Every one of those makes the click more expensive without changing what you bid.

FAQ

What roofers ask about paid search

How much should a roofing company spend on PPC?

Work backwards from the click price in your own metro rather than from a national figure, because the table above shows those differ by eight times. Take your realistic cost per click, divide your monthly budget by it, and that is roughly how many clicks you are buying. Then ask yourself honestly what share of those become a booked inspection. If the answer is a handful, the budget is not the number to change first.

Why did my roofing campaign work for a few days and then stop?

This is the most common roofing PPC story and it usually has one of three causes. The budget was exhausted early each day, so the ads stopped showing before the afternoon. Automated bidding recalibrated after the first few days and started buying different, worse traffic. Or the initial burst coincided with weather, and what looked like campaign performance was demand that has since passed. Check impression share by hour before changing anything else.

Are Local Services Ads better than Google Ads for roofers?

They are different products, not competing versions of one. Local Services Ads charge per lead rather than per click, sit above the map pack, and require license and insurance verification, which is a real barrier for out-of-area crews. Google Ads gives you control over which searches you appear on, which is exactly what the cheap-specific-terms point above depends on. Most roofers running both use LSAs for volume and Google Ads for precision.

Should I bid on storm and hail keywords all year?

Keep them in the account, budgeted low, rather than switching them on after an event. Two reasons. Campaign history and quality signals do not build overnight, so a cold campaign launched the morning after hail starts at a disadvantage. And the volume is not zero in a normal month, it is just small, which is part of why the clicks stay cheap.

Do I need a separate landing page, or can ads point at my site?

You need the ad and the page to be about the same thing. A storm damage ad landing on a general homepage asks someone with water coming in to go and find the right section themselves. That does not require a separately built landing page, only a service page that matches the search. See roofing website design for why storm and replacement traffic want different pages.

Should I run it myself or hire someone?

The account structure is learnable. What is hard is watching it during the weeks that matter, which are the weeks you are least available because the phone is already ringing. If you hire, the question worth asking is what they do differently in a storm week, and if the answer is nothing specific, they are managing your account the same way they manage a dentist's.

Is PPC or SEO the better investment for a roofer?

They answer different questions. Paid buys presence this week and stops when you stop. Organic and map visibility take months and then keep working, including through the seasons when you are not spending. If you have to pick one and you can survive the wait, the compounding one wins. If you have crews to feed this month, it does not.
